Abstract

Grafting pieces of nervous tissue into the brain and expecting axons to grow out from the transplant implies that we are dealing with axotomized neurons and with regenerating neurons. In this context it might be useful to review the basic events that occur in neurons of the peripheral nervous system as a consequence of axotomy. In general, it is accepted that these events are somehow related to regeneration. However, as we will discuss later, this is questionable, since at least some of the retrograde changes can be suppressed without inhibiting regeneration (Carlsen et al. 1982). It should also be pointed out that changes occurring during regeneration may also take place in neurons exposed to other noxious stimuli such as hypoxia. An example for this is the increase of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) (Kleihues et al. 1975).
