Prothoracicotropic Hormones and Neurohormones in Bombyx Mori

Abstract

Since Kopec’s discovery of the endocrinological function of insect brain in the early-1920’s, numbers of events in the insect’s life cycle have been proved under the control of the neurohormones, whose chemical structures, however, have been unknown with some exceptions such as adipokinetic hormones (Stone et al., 1976) and periplanetins (Scarborough et al., 1984). The lag in chemistry of insect neurohormones seems mainly due to the fact that only a minute quantity of hormones is present in an individual insect. A clue to eliminate this problem might be the collection of a large amount of insects as starting materials and/or the application of updated ‘micro-chemistry’ as well as technologies of modern bioscience such as monoclonal antibody and gene manipulation.
