Abstract
Underground wastewater disposal and storage by well injection is under consideration today by both industries [1–5] and municipalities [2, 6–9] to help solve environmental problems. A national goal established by Congress in the Clean Water Act of 1972 (PL 92–500) was to cease all discharges of pollutants to navigable waters by 1985 [10]. The capacities of surface waters to receive effluents without violating existing water quality standards is diminishing with time. Costs of disposal or storage using conventional and advanced waste treatment techniques are increasing rapidly. These and other factors have caused both dischargers and regulatory agencies to consider subsurface injection as a mechanism for the disposal of waste fluids.
