Abstract
The user has some control over how REDUCE operates internally, and also over the form in which results are printed out. Most of these options are set or changed by using the ON and OFF commands. Instead of Options we sometimes speak of Modes, or speak of the ON and OFF commands as setting Switches. Some options (modes, switches) are normally ON; the user changes them by issuing an OFF command. The option then remains OFF until the user returns it to normal by issuing an ON command. For other options the normal mode is OFF, so the sequence of commands would be reversed.
