Abstract
For many physicians, the most difficult aspect of treating alcoholic patients is lack of knowledge about what resources are available once the diagnosis is made. Presenting the diagnosis and working with the patient’s denial, as discussed in Chapter 6, are the first steps. However, the majority of patients require additional, specific treatment. With adequate knowledge and skills, the primary care physician is in a unique position to take advantage of his special relationship with the patient to facilitate such treatment.
