Abstract
Quaternary landscape ecology represents a holistic approach to the understanding of the long-term patterns and processes operative on landscapes. It is a perspective for understanding the development of terrain, climate, and the biota, including mankind. Contemporary syntheses emphasize that studies of landscape ecology can be undertaken on virtually any geographic scale (Tjallingii and de Veer 1982; Naveh and Lieberman 1984; Forman and Godron 1986). We suggest that additional dimensions of landscape dynamics can be perceived by integrating landscape patterns with processes of landscape development over time scales of hundreds of years to tens of thousands of years.
