Gene Regulation by Steroid Hormones III

Abstract

Cytochrome P-450 proteins represent a group of enzymes (molecular weight 45,000–60,000) that are present in all eukaryotes and in some Prokaryotic organisms. These heme-containing enzymes are a major component of the defenses that protect living organisms against the toxic chemicals in their environment. The P-450 enzymes add oxygen to a wide range of compounds. They are needed for the synthesis of endogenous biologically active agents, including steroid hormones and prostaglandins, but also work on foreign chemicals, helping in their detoxification and converting them to a form that can be more readily excreted from the body. Paradoxically, however, some of the foreign chemicals, which are initially not capable of causing cancer, are converted to active carcinogens by P-450 catalyzed reactions.
