Elaborative Propensities During Adolescence: The Relationships Among Memory Knowledge, Strategy Behavior, and Memory Performance

  • Chapter
Imagery and Related Mnemonic Processes

Abstract

Much of the developmental improvement in memory performance can be attributed to age-related changes in children’s effective use of appropriate memory strategies. A number of factors are presumed to influence these strategic applications (see Guttentag, 1985; Pressley, Borkowski, & Schneider, in press) including metamemory (see Schneider, 1985). The present chapter reports experiments which illustrate the relationship between developmental improvements in metamemory, strategic behavior and memory performance.
