The Search for Identity in Changing Times
Through the death of Professor W. H. Julius in 1925, a faculty position became available at the University of Utrecht in The Netherlands. A committee under the chairmanship of Ehrenfest was appointed to make recommendations for a possible successor to the Utrecht faculty. That body in turn would submit a list of nominees to the Minister of Education, who would make the ultimate decision. The committee recommended Kramers, and the faculty and minister concurred. Kramers’ acceptance of the offer was practically guaranteed by the way the system works. He gave his inaugural address on February 15, 1926 and started his lectures in Utrecht on May 5,1926. Because this is so standard and hackneyed, it seems hardly worth mentioning.
