Tumor Promoter-Mediated Modulation of Cell Differentiation and Communication: The Phorbol Ester — Oncogene Connection

  • Chapter
Tumor Cell Differentiation

Part of the book series: Experimental Biology and Medicine ((EBAM,volume 17))

Abstract

Proto-oncogenes, when expressed inappropriately or in altered form have the potential to cause cancer. Cancer is usually accompanied by a loss of cellular differentiation and by enhanced proliferation. As the normal function of proto-oncogenes appears to include control of cell differentiation and proliferation, aberrant function of these oncogenes is probably involved in the various molecular events that contribute to the development of malignancy.
