Abstract

Wound-healing remains a major medical problem. Yearly in the United States alone there are 29 million in-patient hospital surgical procedures (plus many more handled on an out-patient basis), 2.3 million burns requiring medical attention, approximately 6 million bedsores (decubitus ulcers) at any given time, 1.1 million severe fractures, and 2 million chronic diabetic ulcers (leading to 40,000 leg amputations yearly) [1].
