Abstract
This study began by identifying some desiderata for the psycholinguistic study of sentence production, especially a principled characterization of the variables affecting the conceptualization and formulation stages and an experimental paradigm that would successfully control and systematically vary the input to the production process which (a) does not involve language comprehension and (b) could be replicated cross-linguistically. Tied up with the first problem is the question of language and thought; a solution to the second problem would make possible the study of universals of language performance (production).
