Abstract

Investigations of the problem of resuspension of estuarial muds under waves in laboratory experiments are complicated by the complexity of mud bed response. It is essential to conduct tests in which wave attenuation, motion within the bed, and sediment resuspension are characterized through appropriate parametric measurements. As a consequence of bed motion, estimation of shear stress at the bed surface for the purpose of correlation with the rate of erosion, cannot, in general, be carried out using the rigid bed assumption. A brief review of possible models for simulating mud behavior is given, followed by a discussion of the significant phenomenon in the wave-mud interaction. A linearized two-layered model for evaluating the shear stress at the soft mud-fluid interface and the wave damping coefficient is presented. This model considers the upper fluid to be Newtonian and the lower mud layer to be viscoelastic. Application of the model to limited amount of previously obtained data on mud motion indicates encouraging trends.
