Abstract
Chin and Goldstein (10) in 1977 published a study on the biophysical effects of ethanol in membranes from ethanol-tolerant and control animals. Their work showed that ethanol in vitro fluidizied membranes and that chronic ethanol consumption resulted in a structural change in the membrane that made the membrane resistant to in vitro fluidization by ethanol. That study and subsequent studies resulted in the development of a hypothesis that proposes that membrane fluidity is involved in the actions of ethanol and has been used to explain ethanol effects ranging from sensitivity and intoxication to membrane transport and neurotransmitter uptake and release (for a review see 24).
