Abstract

People—friends, colleagues, maybe especially family—keep pointing out to me, with a bemused air, how strange it is to find me arguing on the same side as religious leaders in the debate on surrogacy arrangements. I too occasionally find some amusement in the “strange bedfellows” phenomenon. Indeed, with carefully groomed “happy surrogates” and their equally wellgroomed brokers placed on a TV or radio show by a professional public relations firm, I often find myself, side by side with some priest or rabbi, brought in by a producer to give a “balanced” view. So we argue the problems of surrogacy, sandwiched between car commercials, wine cooler ads, and other signs of the times.
