Abstract

Epstein-Barr Virus immortalized B lymphocytes axe subject to autocrine stimulation because of, their capacity to produce endogenous factors which stimulate growth. This study questions whether B lymphocytes producing growth factor can also affect proliferation of T lymphocytes. The helper. T cell line, D10.G4.1, is exquisitely sensitive to immunomodulating factors (IL-1 and IL-2) and requires exogenously supplied IL-1 to proliferate in response to ConA. D10.G4.1 cells are stimulated by released soluble factors from virally stimulated B lymphocyte. Para-fornaldehyde-fixed EBV-carrying lymphoblastoid cells also are potent stimulators of ConA treated D10.G4.1 cells in blastogenesis assays. In acute EBV infection T lymphocyte proliferation may be stimulated by released soluble factors from virally infected B lymphocytes. Leukocytosis of T lymphocytes also may result from direct paracrine stimulation by virus carrying B lymphocytes.
