Role of T Helper Lymphocytes in Autoimmune Diseases

  • Chapter
Pathology Reviews · 1989

Abstract

A large amount of experimental work on autoimmune diseases has been concentrated on the study of autoantibodies, cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL), or on deficiencies of T suppressor cells. The purpose of this review is to present evidence that in many autoimmune diseases, either organ-specific or systemic, T helper (Th) lymphocytes play a predominant role. The importance of the Th cell in autoimmune diseases should come as no surprise, in view of the central role that these cells play in almost all immune responses.
