Abstract

Under physiological conditions, the activity of calcium, that is, the concentration of free ionized calcium (Ca2+) in the cytosol of human red cells, is less than 10-7 M, which is about 104 times lower than that present in the blood plasma (see Rega and Garrahan, 1986). Although the passive permeability of the red-cell membrane to Ca2+ is very low, there is a small but permanent leak of Ca2+ into the cell. Hence, active transport of Ca2+ to the extracellular medium is required to maintain the low concentration of Ca2+ in the cytosol.
