It was early afternoon and the plane banked lazily in a cloudy sky over the Highlands of New Guinea. The pilot chuckled as he swiveled to peer back into the dim cavern of the plane’s cabin. He had a full load, and the cabin reeked of its many cargoes: tools, tractor parts, grub, kerosene drums, and three sheep secured in crates.
