Abstract
In §1.4, we studied a first order system equivalent to a telegraph equation and determined lines ø(x,t)=0 across which the system variables were continuous, with simple discontinuities of derivatives. In multidimensional systems with three or more independent variables, the characteristic lines are replaced with characteristic surfaces.
