Abstract

By comparison with the mechanics and thermal models for machining in Chapter 3, this chapter will be less quantitative and more qualitative. The calculations in Chapter 3 treated the interfaces at the rake face of the cutting edge or wheel contact region in grinding as if everything was known in a very precise and quantitative way. In reality this is not the case. This chapter covers cutting edge materials and fluids applied at the interface, where they interact with the workpiece to affect both the friction, temperatures and wear in machining and grinding.
