Abstract

Many control problems require a change of states in a finite time. For example, in DC motor control, we might wish to achieve a desired speed in minimum time. Similarly, in position control of robotic manipulators or in the track-accessing operation of computer disk drives, we might wish to achieve a finite rigid-body displacement with minimum power dissipation in the electromagnetic actuator or minimum excitation of the flexible modes. This type of problem constitutes a special class of problems and is often referred to as the point-to-point control problem.
