Abstract
In 1900, only 3.1 million people in the United States were 65 or older. In 1980, 25 million were 65 or older, some 10 million of whom were 75 or older. By 2025, it is estimated that almost 60 million individuals will be over age 65 and about 30 million will be over age 75. In the past, women did not live long enough to reach the age of normal menopause. Only recently has the life span of the human encompassed the postmenopausal years; therefore, the complications associated with menopause rarely occurred.
