Abstract
In the present chapter and in Chapter 5, we go back to the days of Cardano, Fermat, Pascal, Huygens, the Bernoullis, de Moivre, Montmort and Laplace when probability theory was born and developed into a science. By writing this book, we pay homage in a modest way to these great men. For the historical material we were happy to have had at our disposal the excellent books by Todhunter (1865) and Hald (1990). Another interesting work on the history of probability is Maistrov (1974). Stigler (1986) is an important book on the history of statistics and certain parts of probability. The elementary textbook by Blom (1989b) contains some sections with classical problems of probability.
