Abstract
Programming is difficult because programs are complex. Almost every line of a program contains important details, and it is easy to become overwhelmed by the mass of detail. It is difficult to write a program without making mistakes; it is more difficult to understand completely a program written by another person; and it is more difficult still to find and correct errors in a large program.
