A Historic Review of Patellar Pain

  • Chapter
The Patella

Abstract

Afflictions of the patella have received a great deal of attention over the years. As early as 1906, in the German literature, Budinger described traumatic Assuring of patellar articular cartilage as a source of anterior knee pain.1 Ludloff2 and Axhausen3 reported similar changes on the patellar articular surface, and in an attempt to treat this lesion, in 1910, Ludloff described scraping the articular cartilage. In 1917, Aleman introduced the term chondromalacia of the patella, when he observed degeneration of the patellar articular cartilage at the time of arthrotomy.4,5 By 1924 this term was accepted and popularized in the literature by Koenig.6 In 1933, Kulowski7 reported the first U.S. case of chondromalacia patellae in a 21-year-old woman in whom Kulowski observed excessive lateral patellar mobility.
