Abstract

It was previously noted that the function of biological systems would best be described from both functional and substrate perspectives. Let us begin the analysis from a functional point of view, so that we may reveal what the system must “be able to do.” We will then move on to the description of the substrates of biological systems with regard to neural networks, in order to consider how an actual system consisting of neurons that have specific functional properties might be constructed. Since this text is intended for biologists and physicians, there will be no mathematical formulas in this discourse. However, those who wish to explore some of the mathematics that provide the basis for the discourse to follow can find them in the Appendix (see also Baev and Shimansky 1992). The corresponding references to the Appendix are provided in the text to follow.
