Abstract

As life expectancy increased in the early twentieth century, more and more women began living past menopause and experiencing many of the symptoms that accompany the end of the reproductive years. Researchers soon recognized that many of these symptoms were caused by the reduction in estrogen levels that accompanied menopause. It was proposed that, by replacing the missing estrogen, the symptoms of menopause could be alleviated. Thus, the concept of estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) was born.
