Assessing Neoplasia

Abstract

This chapter is based on the premise that the current clinical paradigm of neoplasia, which rests on descriptions of neoplastic phenomena in the clinic (Gatter, 1994; Cotran et al., 1994) has been overtaken by analytical methods available in the laboratory (Salomon, 1987). Yet the scientist is still dependent on clinical judgements which appear subjective in the absence of a unifying hypothesis. A reasoned perspective is presented which attempts to account for the whole range of neoplastic phenomena, and goes some way towards providing common ground for the various disciplines involved. Such an enormous field can only be presented in the most general terms, but even these can provide guidelines for assessing neoplasia. This introduction is followed by summary of the basic principles, how they account for neoplastic phenomena, how this applies in practice and what consequences might follow.
