Part of the book series: Partially Ordered Systems ((PARTIAL.ORDERED))

Abstract

Viscous fingering experiments carried out with air-liquid crystal systems are reviewed. The specific features of the anisotropy (its intrinsic character, in contrary to the solidification experiment or to engraving a lattice onto the plates of the Hele-Shaw cell) is discussed. Typically a reentrant morphological behavior of tip splitting and dendritic growth was found in the experiments as a function of the driving force and temperature. No effect of the initial director alignment on the pattern morphology was found in the nematic phase, instead the flow alignment proved to be decisive. Contrary in smectic phases the initial director orientation strongly influences the pattern shape.
