Generation of Higher Harmonics in Noisy Nonlinear Systems

Abstract

We study the role of noise in view of the generation of higher harmonics in nonlinear systems. For a wide class of nonlinear systems (stable and bistable), we find a novel, phase-sensitive, noise-induced resonance mechanism. Some higher harmonics show sharp, absorptive-type resonances at certain values of the noise strength. The corresponding phases exhibit—depending on the frequency of the input signal—more or less sharp jumps of π at the very same values of the noise strength.
