Abstract

Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), or thyrotropin, is a glycoprotein normally secreted by the thyrotroph cells of the anterior pituitary gland. Like the other pituitary glycoproteins, TSH is composed of an alpha (α) and a beta (β) subunit. The α-subunit is identical among the glycoprotein hormones, whereas the unique TSH β-subunit confers biological specificity to the hormone. The TSH α and β subunits are glycosylated in specific patterns that determine subunit combination, clearance rates, and bioactivity.
