Abstract

Supernovae and their remnants play a central part in modern astrophysics. Supernovae end the lives of massive stars, form neutron stars and pulsars, synthesize heavy elements, and inject energy into the interstellar medium which can maintain turbulent cloud motions, heat a large fraction of the volume of the galaxy, and accelerate particles. Supernova remnants with their shock waves can also generate cosmic rays and compress clouds, perhaps starting another cycle of star formation.
