Specimen Collection and Transport

Abstract

Diagnostic virology is expensive and time consuming. It is often practiced in laboratories not immediately adjacent to the patient, although it is now likely that some tests that are simple to perform will be available for use in the doctor’s office or surgery in the next few years. However, no matter where it is done, who it is done by, or what technique(s) are used, it will be wasted time, effort, and resources if the specimens taken are poor, ill timed, or incorrectly handled between the time of collection and the time laboratory procedures are begun.
