The study of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, i.e., the study of the interaction between a magnetic field and the turbulent motions of an electrically-conducting fluid, was first undertaken in connection with the implied existence of an interstellar magnetic field. The interaction between the velocity and magnetic fields results in a transfer of energy between the kinetic and magnetic spectra, and it is thought that the interstellar magnetic field is maintained by a “dynamo” action from turbulence in the interstellar gas, as shown in Section 20.
