Metastatic Cancer of the Skin

  • Chapter
Skin Cancer

Abstract

Cutaneous metastases occur in up to 9% of all patients with cancer (1). They may be the first sign of visceral cancer. In a series of patients seen in dermatologic consultation with skin metastases, the underlying cancer had been undiagnosed in 60% of patients with lung cancer, 53% with renal cancer, and 40% of patients with ovarian cancer (2). Of women with cutaneous metastatic disease, the metastases were the presenting sign in 6%. The figure was even higher in men. After treatment, skin metastases may be important as the first indication of recurrence. After correlating gross and microscopic features of the primary tumor with the metastatic lesion, there may be reasons to suspect a second primary tumor (2).
