Remotely Sensed Ocean Features and Their Relation to Fish Distributions

Marine Organisms as Indicators

Abstract

Spatial and temporal variability in the distribution of an organism is often indicative of variability in certain environmental parameters. Commercially harvested fish populations make especially good indicators as they are consistently “sampled” through fishing activities. Changes in physical oceanic conditions may be reflected in catch records as variations in distribution, abundance, or recruitment. However, the isolation and study of the underlying physical processes requires concurrent detailed sampling of the fish habitat.
