Summary

This paper is concerned with the analysis of ordinal data obtained from stratified experiments. A threshold model is defined to provide a link between the ordinal scale of measurement and a linear scale on which treatments are supposed to act. In order to account for stratification in the data random effects are added to the linear predictor. It is shown that maximum likelihood estimates can be obtained by iterative weighted least quares. Relationships with other types of data are discussed.
