Abstract
In this paper, I discuss some similarities and differences among a collection of research reports on NSF research on the engineering design process. I compare the methods of gathering information on which the researchers draw their conclusions. I discuss why I think hypertext is a promising basis for technical assistance in the design process and how more controlled experimental methodology may provide more insights into the design process.
