Abstract

Despite potentially curative surgery, the incidence of recurrence of gastric carcinoma is relatively high. In addition to tumor aggressiveness and growth characteristics, surgical strategy is a determining factor in the frequency of recurrence.1–3 Recurrence can take the form of distant metastases or peritoneal carcinomatosis, hence reflecting disseminated tumor disease. At present no cure is possible in this situation. The degree to which cytostatic treatment, given an early diagnosis of metastases, leads to improved prognosis and whether cure may be achieved through renewed surgical treatment, given localized tumor recurrence, are unresolved issues. This is presumed in the requirement for routine follow-up care of gastric cancer patients following partial or total gastrectomy.4,5
