Abstract

Since the introduction of fiber endoscopy in the late 1960s, a fundamental change—which cannot be underestimated—has occurred in the diagnosis of gastric carcinoma. Fewer than 3% of all cancers diagnosed in the preendoscopic era were in the early stages, but with the advent of endoscopy this figure has already reached 15% to 20% at some centers and has surpassed 60% in Japan, where endoscopic screening programs were established early on.
