The explosion of a worldwide environmental consciousness in the late 1960s and into the 1980s is a social phenomenon of amazing intensity. The near hysterical levels reached by some ecological prophets had strong parallels with certain religious sects that have prophesied the end of the world, sold all their earthly possessions, and then waited for the Day of Judgment. Fortunately, global ecosystems were not ready to quit, as yet, so we must assume they had more basic resilience than has been attributed to them.
