Abstract

Perhaps the obvious person to report on the child’s mood is the child himself. Unfortunately, self-report of depressed mood at age 10 is not generally reliable. In fact, no self-report measures of depression were collected at wave 1. Parents’, teachers’, and observers’ ratings are examined in this report. Items which are sometimes.included in scales of depression were excluded here because they muddied the water, so to speak, between depression and self-esteem and peer relations. Items examined here deal specifically with mood rather than manifestations of depression.
