Numerical Computation of Transition to Turbulence

Abstract

The extreme application of numerical techniques to transition problems involves the direct solution of the full nonlinear, three-dimensional, time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations for prescribed initial and boundary conditions. All spatial and temporal scales are intended to be resolved, i.e., no modeling is employed. This position paper addresses the current and prospective uses of direct numerical simulation of transition to turbulence.
