Abstract
The preceding chapters by Kavale and Swanson set the stage for this whole volume, one devoted entirely to research on interventions in learning disabilities. As noted by Kavale, intervention is the reason for the existence of the field of learning disabilities. While other disciplines, such as psychology and paleontology, can establish and develop themselves by virtue of their ability to explain existing phenomena relevant to those disciplines, learning disabilities is a viable and worthwhile field of inquiry only to the extent that it is able to actuate positive change in the lives of those so characterized. Without reliably effective interventions, all our abilities to document and explain the learning disabilities phenomenon are of little value.
