Abstract
The inhibition caused by adenosine on neurotransmitter release from rat phrenic nerve terminals, described by Ginsborg and Hirst (1972), constitutes the first of a series of observations demonstrating that adenosine decreases the release of excitatory neurotransmitters (acetylcholine, serotonin, noradrenaline, glutamate, aspartate) (see e.g. Ribeiro and Sebastião, 1989). No consistent descriptions appeared on reduction by adenosine of the release of inhibitory neurotransmitters such as GABA or glycine.
