Abstract

Ethylene dibromide (EDB) has been produced in the United States since the 1920s, as a lead scavenger in leaded gasoline. Although this accounted for most of the use of EDB, this application has raised little controversy. However, due to a desire to reduce lead exposure, leaded gasoline is being phased out. EDB is also one of the most effective and widely used fumigants for fruits and vegetables. This application generated considerable controversy, due to unexpected environmental contamination and occupational exposure at the same time animal tests indicated that EDB was a carcinogen, mutagen and reproductive toxin.
