Bare-Soil Evaporation in Relation to Tillage

Abstract

Direct evaporation from soil constitutes a major pathway of water loss, which is considered wasteful since it does not contribute to crop production. It is estimated that from 50 to 70% of annual precipitation is returned to the atmosphere as direct evaporation without any benefit to crop production (Hide, 1954; Peters and Russel, 1959; Harrold et al., 1959; Peters, 1960). In fact, even in growing crops direct evaporation from (exposed) soil surface E s accounts for a substantial part of evapotranspiration (ET). Tanner et aL (1960) estimated that in widely spaced row crops such as corn, if the soil is wetted frequently by rain or irrigation, E s may be as high as 50% of ET, even when the canopy is fully developed.
