Abstract

Areas of temperate forests are currently experiencing significant perturbation from air pollution. The influence of air contaminants on specific forests is variable and is dependent on exposure (dose), hazard (importance of susceptible species in exposed forests and other site specific variables), management objectives, and the perspective of interest, i.e., individual tree, stand, population, community, or ecosystem. Before we consider the importance of specific air pollutants and specific forest systems, it is essential to have an overview of general forest health principles.
