Gamma-Rays and X-Rays from Supernovae

Book cover Supernovae

Part of the book series: Astronomy and Astrophysics Library ((AAL))

Abstract

There are three distinct phases in a supernova when γ-rays and X-rays may be expected to be produced:

  1. (1)

When the supernova shock wave breaks through the surface of the star, and/or when this shock encounters any circumstellar material (due to a wind in a presupernova phase of stellar evolution).

  2. (2)

When radioactive nuclei, freshly synthesized during the explosion, decay and emit γ-rays.

  3. (2)

When the supernova ejecta thin out sufficiently that high-energy radiation from any neutron star/pulsar remnant can penetrate this overlying material.
